It may be cliched to say that young people are the future but it is a truism. Consequently Sunderland Lions make great efforts to support young people in worthy activities.

Each year the club finances the cost of sending thirty youngsters to Derwent Hill in Keswick so that they can experience an outdoor programme designed to build confidence and develop  team  work. The selected children would not normally get an opportunity to experience this type of activity for a variety of reasons.

Lions around the world run youth programmes during the summer vacation period. The club finances the cost of travel to a European country where they spend time with a host family and then join an international camp with other candidates from numerous countries. This experience is a tremendous boost to a better understanding of other countries and cultures. The club sponsors sometimes up to three candidates to participate in the youth exchange programme and in 2001 hosted the UK youth camp. This year a local young man went to Germany.

For young people with a commitment to community service some Lions clubs sponsor LEO clubs (Leadership Experience Opportunity). Sunderland Lions has sponsored a LEO club based in Sunderland High School receiving its charter in March 2010. It is hoped that some of these youngsters will wish to join a Lions club when they are a little older.

For exceptionally talented musicians we have a bursary scheme to assist them to progress with their development towards a professional standard.
